The Earliest Walkers on Earth … the First Steps of Child Prodigies

    (PRWEB) August 13, 2006

How soon can a baby crawl? How early can they walk? The Cawleys, an Irish/Malay family living in Singapore are, perhaps, providing an answer to this question, for each of their three children has shown very rapid development, by crawling as early as four months and walking at six months old.

The eldest child, Ainan Celeste Cawley, born on the 23rd November 1999, was crawling at four months and walking confidently at six and a half months old. He is now six years old. (Please see: http://scientific-child-prodigy.blogspot.com/2006/09/earliest-walker-earliest-talker.html ).

The second child, Fintan Nadym Cawley, born on the 25th June 2003, was crawling at a respectable six months and walking at eight months. He has just turned three.

The third child, Tiarnan Hasyl Cawley, born on the 20th January 2006, was able to hold his own head up, unsupported and look around, on the day he was born. (Note: most babies are six months old before they can support their own head properly, having first started to lift their heads, briefly, at one to two months.*) He began to crawl at four months and one week. (An average baby is nine or ten months old before they start to do that.*) and started standing, while holding onto household objects, within two weeks. (Note that an average baby won’t do this until at least eight months.*) He also began to crawl upstairs, unaided, at five months and two weeks, on the 6th July 2006. (Babies are typically twelve months old before they master stairs.*)A week later he was able to squat down, in a controlled fashion, from a standing position. (An average baby tries this when they are nine or ten months.*) He is now six months and three weeks old and both crawls steadily and walks from place to place by supporting himself on objects. Sometimes he stands briefly unsupported, by anything, before sitting down again. It should not be long before he is walking without holding onto anything.

The children are half-Irish and half-Singaporean by blood, the father Valentine Cawley, originally from London, of Irish origin, the mother Syahidah Osman, from Singapore, of Malay origin.

It may also be of note that Ainan, the eldest, spoke his first words at less than one month of age, read his first letters at eight months, began reading independently at three, and has since shown a precociously developed intellect with a particular gift for Science. (Please see: http://scientific-child-prodigy.blogspot.com/2006/09/first-words-of-child-prodigy.html )

Remarkably, Ainan was clearly aware of the meaning and significance of a clock at two months of age, having taken to staring at it, and preparing himself for the return of his mother, at the right time, each evening. He displayed a retentive memory from the beginning, and at twelve months, gave an account of his own birth, from the perspective of someone inside the womb…so clearly this was a genuine memory, since we had not explained how he had come into the world.

Tiarnan, the third child is already showing signs of developing in much the same way.

All three children are highly photogenic and a photo opportunity can be arranged – or we can provide photographs on request, via email.

    Biographical details of the parents:

Syahidah Osman, 27 is an artist with a gift for discerning the lines of a face and rendering them with simplicity and clarity. She is ambidextrous and can draw equally well with both hands. Furthermore, she can draw the two halves of a face simultaneously, one with her left, the other with her right hand. She can also draw two faces at the same time. She is seeking gallery/agent representation for her work and is open to portrait commissions, rendered in her inimitable style and method.

Valentine Cawley, 38 has worked variously as a scientist – he was a working physicist at the age of 17 – an actor, a writer and a teacher. One of his works, “Lord Valentine the Misplaced”, a piece of performance art, was global news on CNN, and Reuters in 1994 and 1995, respectively. Richard Blystone was the interviewer for CNN and they probably retain the footage. Valentine has since written two books which are being readied for submission to publishers. He is a graduate in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University, which he found highly unstimulating – both the course and the University.

Like his wife, he too is ambidextrous, and has been known to give lectures with a pen in both hands, writing on the board, with each, to the delight of his students.

As for his childhood, he read widely from three, memorizing books as he did so, and had a very early interest in Science which Cambridge knocked out of him. However, his son, Ainan, now six years old, has reawakened his interest with his non-stop questioning on everything from black holes and the properties of the artificial transuranics, to the chemistry of the halogens.

As a child, Valentine showed an uncanny memory for all kinds of information, but most notably for music. He could sing or whistle any piece of music on hearing it just once. Pieces performed by memory, at 11, included Mozart’s Requiem, and Bach’s St. John’s Passion, which he sung, in their entirety, without the aid of being able to read music…he couldn’t then, and still can’t, now.

He believes that the world wastes the gifts of its most gifted, having observed that his own polymathic gifts, as a child, in science, music, art, acting and creative writing, went unappreciated. He is happy, therefore, to see the rebirth of these gifts in his children for there is another chance that they might be fully realized, to the benefit of all.

Should any literary agent be interested in representing his books, they are welcome to contact him.

Note: Data on average age for achievement of milestones for babies was taken from Babycentre.com.

New Science Fiction Novel Unveils Parallel Universes

Cleveland, OH (PRWEB) May 19, 2012

Imagine being able to go between Earth and a parallel world in an alternate universe under Nazi control. In his book, “Zone 2” (published by iUniverse) author S. Alan Schweitzer writes of a computer expert working for a company that has deceived its staff into building pathways to this parallel world it has discovered.

Brad Cole, the computer expert, awakes up in a hospital with no memory of what happened, his past or identity. The author writes:

He was unable to sit up. His unrestrained emotional response was pronounced as he began to roll his head insistently. Slowly, Brad was able to comprehend questions concerning what he had endured and why. Who was he? Why did this happen to him? Who was responsible? Among the several faces, he suddenly reached out toward the woman he barely recognized, but he was unable to move his arms. He gasped and was suddenly seized by a coughing fit.

In “Zone 2,” Brad Cole discovers the alternate universe is full of cruelty, pain and danger. Brad struggles to remember his life while he explores this parallel world looking for answers. He also comes face to face with his alter ego, who turns out to be his brother. Schweitzer’s interest in science fiction was developed by his career as a reference librarian. Some of the titles that caught his eye included, Robert A. Heinlein, Ursula K. Le Guin, Arthur C. Clarke and Ray Bradbury entranced the author with their literary themes and characters, and they remain a dim memory to Schweitzer.

KnowledgeWorks Names Eileen Rudden, Education Advocate and Software Veteran, to Board of Directors

    Eileen Rudden

Cincinnati, OH (PRWEB) May 17, 2012

Eileen Rudden, an information technology pioneer and hands-on advocate for improving public education, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of KnowledgeWorks, President and CEO Brian Ross announced today.

Rudden, who served on the KnowledgeWorks board from 2008 to 2010, recently served as Chief Officer, College and Career Preparation at Chicago Public Schools. At CPS, Rudden led the efforts of the third largest public school system in the United States to increase college access and persistence and to reinvent career and vocational education. She was a 2009 Broad Fellow and graduate of the Broad Superintendent’s Academy, a rigorous, 10-month program that places successful executives into urban school districts to help those districts transform into effective public enterprises.

At KnowledgeWorks, Rudden will help direct the efforts of the social enterprise as it seeks to expand its innovative approaches to education nationwide through two high school transformation subsidiaries and its “Cradle to Career” collective impact initiative to help communities improve education outcomes for kids.

“KnowledgeWorks has consistently shown itself to be an organization which is focused on transforming the world of K-12 education from a world of schooling to a world of learning,” Rudden said. “I am attracted by its New Tech Network High Schools, its Strive community cradle-to-career approach, and Ed Works’ ability to create early college high schools, STEM schools and turnaround schools.”

KnowledgeWorks Board Chairman Joseph P. Tomain said Rudden’s rejoining the board enhances KnowledgeWorks’ strategic focus. “Eileen returns to the board as a Broad Fellow and having helped the nation’s third-largest school district move forward the college and career readiness agenda,” Tomain said. “Her perspective is invaluable as we strive to equip students for the future and help communities support children from cradle to career.”

Ross said he is looking forward to Rudden’s expertise on the board. “Eileen’s ability to ask insightful questions and challenge us to always keep student achievement at the center of our work is a hallmark of her leadership,” he said.

Rudden holds a bachelor’s degree from Brown University and an MBA from Harvard, and has been a leader in the innovative software industry for more than 25 years. She currently serves as Board Chair of SoundBite Communications, an emerging company providing cloud-based customer communications, as well as advising education software startups such as The Achievement Network, A Better Lesson and Testive.

She formerly led the Unified Communications Division of Avaya, a Fortune 500 global business communications leader. A 14-year veteran of IBM’s Lotus Software unit, Ms. Rudden was senior vice president and general manager responsible for Lotus Notes and Domino email and collaboration software. She was a member of IBM’s Technical Leadership Council. Early in her career, Rudden was a manager at The Boston Consulting Group.

In education, Rudden served on the board of trustees of Brown University from 2003-2009. She was the elected President of the 70,000 member Brown Alumni Association and is currently the Chair of the Advisory Committee on Computing and Information Technology at Brown. Rudden is also former Treasurer and trustee of Lesley University, a major provider of graduate education to classroom teachers in the United States, and currently serves on Lesley’s Leadership Council.

KnowledgeWorks is bringing the future of learning to America’s high schools and creating widespread, lasting change in the communities and states we serve. Our portfolio of high school approaches includes New Tech Network high schools, EDWorks New Start, Fast Track and STEMLab high schools. Building on the principles of collective impact, our Strive subsidiary is helping communities create the civic infrastructure to unite stakeholders around shared goals, measures and results in education and organizing a national network of cradle-to-career communities.

ROLEC Launches Three New Sizes of technoBOX ABS Enclosures

technoBOX – modern and economic ABS enclosures, rated IP66 for industrial electronics equipment

Fareham, Hampshire (PRWEB UK) 16 May 2012

ROLEC has launched three new sizes for its popular range of technoBOX ABS enclosures for modern electronics and electrical equipment.

Designers can now choose from a total of 10 different sizes in the technoBOX range of wall mount enclosures.

ROLEC unveiled technoBOX two years ago as a high quality but competitively priced range of plastic enclosures to meet increasing demand from electronics designers covering a wide range of sectors.

These attractive enclosures include a bevelled lid, clean lines and easy assembly – all at very competitive prices which start at just £12.

The new sizes mean that the technoBOX range is now available with external dimensions from 66 x 51 x 35 mm to 241 x 161 x 80 mm.

The enclosures are moulded in halogen-free ABS or – on request – polycarbonate. The standard colour is light grey, RAL 7035.

Special colours can also be moulded on demand as part of ROLEC’s ever-increasing range of customisation options.

ROLEC technoBOX IP66 enclosures are fully insulated to VDE 0100, making them ideal for housing different types of indoor or outdoor industrial electronics and electrical equipment.

The lid is recessed to allow easy location of a membrane keypad, front panel or polycarbonate product label.

All internal and external fastening points are compatible with industry-standard dimensions.

Internal screw pillars can be used for fitting mounting plates, PCBs and terminal assemblies. The sides can also be easily machined for cable glands.

Accessories for technoBOX electrical enclosures include mounting plates, external mounting brackets, front panels, feet, lid hinges and terminal rails.

ROLEC can customise these electronic enclosures with holes and cut-outs, silk-screen printing and much more to provide a fully finished housing ready for mounting the components and assemblies.

Features of ROLEC technoBOX ABS enclosures:

Modern and attractive enclosures for electronic and electrical equipment
Durable ABS enclosures in a useful range of 10 industry-standard sizes
Recessed lid for secure fitting of a membrane keypad or product label (not TBA 060)
        Captured lid fixing screws
Screw bosses in base and lid for mounting components
        Compatible cable glands
Accessories – internal mounting plate, wall mounting brackets, external hinges, terminal rails.

ROLEC electronics and electrical housings are marketed in the UK by Hampshire-based OKW Enclosures Ltd.

OKW Sales and Marketing Director Robert Cox said: “Extending the technoBOX range means it is now even easier for designers to specify high quality enclosures at very competitive prices.

“The three new sizes make customisation quicker and easier and therefore more cost effective, ultimately giving designers even greater value,” he added.

ROLEC is a family-owned business. Its engineers bring decades of expertise and experience to the design and manufacture of industrial enclosures for electronics and electrical equipment.

Other ranges of ABS instrument enclosures designed and manufactured by ROLEC include:

starCASE – highly attractive IP66 enclosures for walls, bulkheads and machines. They can be installed after closing and come with a keypad recess plus hidden lid fixings.

technoCASE – modern IP66 waterproof enclosures with a keypad area. Snap-on lid trims hide the fixing screws. Available in a huge range of standard sizes with interchangeable top and base mouldings plus screw bosses in the base and lid for mounting components.

Whilst the show’s popular Keynote programme also featured its first-ever Twitter-inspired session – ‘Trending Now’, which saw leading nutritionist Patrick Holford, top food journalist Joanna Blythman, Planet Organic beauty buyer Al Overton, and organic food consultant Simon Wright quizzed on everything from QR codes to punk rock.

Audience participation was also a key feature of one of the show’s biggest draws – the Natural Food Show’s live kitchen demonstrations. Among this year’s top chefs was Tim Bouget, who gave ethical food fans a taste of what makes his award winning sustainable restaurant ODE so special, while last year’s winner of the Vegetarian Society’s coveted Cordon Vert Chef of the Future award – Jay Pindolia served up a feast of ‘Veggie Delights’. Medicinal chef Dale Pinnock, local food champion Henrietta Green, and leading organic eco-chef Barny Haughton were also back to wow the crowds for the second year running.

“I really enjoyed the session – it was an amazing platform to showcase our cuisine to like minded businesses and at the same time to learn about, and see, all the new and exciting products in our industry,” says chef Tim Bouget, whose restaurant ODE recently won the SRA’s Sustainable Restaurant of the Year 2012 award (beating Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage).

Keynote Theatre highlights included the show’s opening session – The High Street Fights Back, with Joanna Blythman and campaigner Elisabeth Winkler among the panellists considering some timely questions affecting independents and supermarkets alike. Helen Browning’s ‘in conversation’ Keynote was also a popular choice with visitors, which featured the Soil Association’s chief executive talking candidly about the challenges currently facing the organic community.

Meanwhile across the show floor, the Natural Beauty & Spa section’s ever-popular theatre (sponsored by Kinetic Natural Products Distributor & Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps) saw standing-room only crowds for many of its sessions. With notable highlights including seminars by leading natural cosmetics brands such as Dr Hauschka (Sebastian Parsons); Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps (Mike Bronner & Gero Leson); Green People (Ian Taylor); Balance Me (Sian Jones); and Pukka Herbs (Sebastian Poles).

As ever, the show’s New Product Showcase was a hive of activity – and for the first port of call for many visiting buyers. Featuring a total of 222 entries for 2012, showcase visitors cast over 1700 votes for their favourites on Sunday 1 April. The winning exhibitors were presented with their trophies by BBC star Kate Humble at the industry’s prestigious Natural and Organic Awards later that night. This year’s winning products included MUNE Healthy Water by Health Secret (drink); Beond Organic Bars by Pulsin’ (organic food); CO YO Coconut Milk Yoghurt by Marigold Health Foods Limited (special diet); Peppersmith Sicilian Lemon Mints by Peppersmith (food); Kokoro Haramaki by Healing Bamboo (natural living & home); Quantum Max B by Quantum Nutrition Labs (VMS); and Pukka Ayurveda Firming Face Oil by Pukka Herbs (natural beauty & spa).

Commenting on the diverse range of “innovation” available across the show floor, Kyle Rowe, director of buying at NBTY Europe (owner of Holland & Barrett, Julian Graves, GNC, Nature’s Way (Ireland) and De Tuinen (Netherlands), said: “We are constantly looking for new and unique products to meet our customers’ changing health needs. That’s why it’s encouraging to see so much innovation under one roof at Natural & Organic Products Europe, and it really highlights that our industry in 2012 is in good health.”

Firmly established as the key event on the natural and organic industry calendar, the success of the show has been reflected in the fantastic re-booking rate for next year – with organiser Diversified UK reporting that many key exhibitors will return for the 2013 show.

Highly satisfied exhibitors for 2012 included John Hales (Tea Master Level 4) from The Metropolitan Tea Company: “It’s the best show we do. Two days of constant good business leads and the perfect visitors for me.”

“Natural & Organic Products Europe is a great way of interacting with a huge variety of buyers – and a good way to showcase new flavours and products,” says Adam Bullock, trade sector manager at Green & Black’s Organic.

“The perfect forum to touch the key influencers of the industry,” says Simon Ford, brand manager at Melvita UK.

Many first time exhibitors were equally upbeat about their show experience. Including Swisse Vitamins, which, as the official supplements brand to the Australian Olympics team, hosted special guest appearances from internationally renowned Australians (and Swisse Ambassadors), Olympic swimming star Matthew Targett and Tour de France 2011 winner Cadel Evans on its stand.

“The show gave terrific insight into the UK natural products and health market and introduced us to some key industry contacts. We see a huge opportunity for Swisse in the UK/Europe, with our premium product range and comprehensive marketing and advertising strategy,” says Ulrich Irgens, Swisse’s international business director.

“It was our first time at Natural & Organic Products Europe and we were one of the busiest stands in the aisle! We’ve had excellent interest in our new launches, especially for our Halal products. It’s been well worth exhibiting, as we had a ten-minute interview with Islamic TV,” says Hameed Ahmed, managing director of Medina Healthcare Products.

Chris Sams Rafferty, managing director of Pomegranate, based in the UK’s Isle of Man, chose the show to launch her new Pomegranate Regenuvite™ skincare range and was delighted with the successful results: “What we weren’t expecting was a very high level of interest from overseas distributors. There was significant interest from as far afield as Japan, Singapore, Korea, China and the USA, as well as from Europe!”

Natural & Organic Products Europe will return to Olympia, London, on 7-8 April 2013.

Crooked Brook Designs Chef Coats with Chef Brandon Benack of Truffles Restaurant St. Louis, MO

    Truffles, St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) May 13, 2012

Brandon Benack, recently appointed Chef at Truffles Restaurant, has sought out Crooked Brook, makers of the “World’s Highest Quality Chef Jackets™” to help create custom chef jackets for his new position.

Brandon took advantage of the multitude of fabric and style options Crooked Brook offers and had them create a total of five chef jackets.

His first two chef coats are Style M101:

White, 100% cotton Seersucker fabric, with Abalone buttons.

White, 100% cotton Petit Point Pique fabric, with faux Mother of Pearl buttons.

The remaining three chef jackets are style M100:

White, 100% cotton Seersucker fabric, with Green Turban buttons.

White, 100% cotton Petit Point Pique fabric, with Awabi buttons.

White, 100% Egyptian cotton Gabardine with Faux Mother of Pearl buttons.

Embroidery: Truffles logo on left chest and “Brandon Benack” on the right chest in black.

    About Chef Brandon Benack

Born in Rochester, NY, one could say Brandon’s rich food memories as a child helped guide him on a path to become a chef. Having Grandparents from Calabria – Italy Brandon learned at an early age to roll meatballs for Sunday dinners and harvest grapes for homemade wine.

After his culinary beginnings in Hilton Head, SC, he spent five years at Emeril Lagasse’s legendary Creole restaurants in New Orleans. His next stop would be the most impressionable on is culinary palate, as he embarked on a three-year expedition to Antigua, West Indies. The island’s rich Caribbean culture and diverse variety of produce inspired his study of authentic Caribbean cuisine. In 2007, Benack returned to the US and became Chef de Cuisine at Emeril’s Miami Beach. After four years et the helm of Emeril’s he was recruited by Master Chef Norman Van Aken, known as the “Father of Fusion Cuisine”, as a corporate chef at Norman’s Orlando and Norman’s 180.

In pursuit of a new home for his young family, Benack discovered St. Louis, with its great Mid-western values and emerging culinary scene. Reconnecting with Aleks Jovanovic, with whom he had worked both in New Orleans and Antigua, Chef Brandon found a new home as the Executive Chef of Truffles Restaurant. Together, they are continuing Truffles’ commitment to local, fresh ingredients, bringing passion, intensity and meticulous attention to detail in a seemingly simple yet daring approach to the Modern American restaurant. While incorporating southern classics with local influences, Chef Brandon’s cooking provides the perfect complement to Jovanovic’s “fun” dining approach.

Chef Brandon has appeared on NBC, CBS, Food Network and Plum TV Miami. He has also been featured in publications such as Miami New Times, Orlando Sentinel and Food Buzz.
